A sudden though flow after aesthetics class today…
Idea of beauty-
If I like one object /art piece or something appeals me about that object or an art work like a piece of cloth, or a dish etc, Its as subjective as I like fish with curd and somebody doesn’t. So it is with anything and that is ‘my’ idea of aesthetics. But I must confess that there is something called ‘shared aesthetics’ also. And that generalizes to culture-certain communities–societies–country–nation –universe…
These shared ideas depends upon the cultural morals which community shares.
It can depend upon the ‘fame’ it gets or anything. Like for example, Van Gogh who could not sell his one painting in his whole life time, got on every one’s tongue now a days. Which is because of the struggled life he had.(but in this case, it can be a choice also how you want your life to be. He could have become famous by not struggling and doing something else. Like his brother Theo. But he wanted to know himself, wanted to develop his style so he rejected many things.
Now for example if I say, Jackson Pollock is not an artist. Because I cant get his work. I don’t understand what is the art to throw colours on canvas randomly? But, even if I am not getting it, or whether I call him an artist or not, he is a great artist of art world. And his works make millions in auction houses.
But if I give a second thought to it, I see it in this way that if I don’t understand his work, it is my problem. In the sense that my vocabulary is not sufficient. I can see a work of art in a different perspective too. Like what was the purpose of making that particular art work, in the particular medium and or particular way and the particular place. It can be a protest against something or rejection of some thoughts. So here comes the question of hierarchy in the art. Which deals with the question of hierarchy in beauty as well.
I think its subjective take. There could be layers to it but not particularly hierarchy.
An artwork can be seen in its context. –Cultural-social-political etc too.
Here my question lies in those person’s works that work for themselves, not to show people. Not making any statements (though they make if the work exist and produces a meaning), which we call ‘personal’ of which the purpose can be catharses or self-motivation or self upliftment. Should it be called an artwork?? Especially today when it is a time when the urinal has been displayed in the art gallery and junks are being installed and art has been seen to evoke questions and raise philosophical aspects??
Some of my works are also made like this so, I some times think that ‘I’ should decide for myself what take I want to be with or what I consider an art work is? Still the hierarchy remains there in the history of art. (when it becomes history)and money and fame makes a difference.
These questions even question me that whether I should question my questions or give bullshit about it. But then to go/reach to the stage which ‘human species’ intent to reach, I have to question my questions.
What is art?
What is beauty? What is selfless beauty? Or it exists or not.
What is aesthetics?
What are inspirations? Subtle mind? Spiritual aspect
Is there hierarchy in beauty? In art?
Is beauty and pain interlinked?
Is pursuit of beauty inextricably leads to inappropriate livelihood?
Can beauty save the world?
What is culture? it just belong to us or it is thrown upon us?
Is aesthetic possible or not?
What is morality? What it is to do with art?
Art should make us think out of the box---!
World will be saved by beauty of Christ---!
Beauty of god---!
Difference between art –craft.is there any? (Ordinary art-liberal art-fine art-craft)
Is there paradigm shift possible in your life? Is there any ‘eureka’ moment in your life?
Idea of permanence in art? So do on museums? Conservation? History?
